Wet Bottom Ash System

Wet Bottom Ash System

Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling offers most types of bottom ash conveying systems, customised to meet individual project requirements.

Mechanical Systems

The Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling Submerged Scraper Conveyor (SSC) is used for the continuous removal of furnace bottom ash from conventional pf-fired boilers and is particularly suitable where headroom is limited. The system is capable of quenching and transporting over 100 tonne/hours of ash and offers greater energy efficiency than hydraulic systems of comparable capacity. A double roll crusher feeds the ash either to a slurry disposal system, or onto belt conveyors for onward transfer.

Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling SSC's have been designed for up to 1000 MWe boilers, up to 50 meters in length, to handle 140 tonnes of stored ash.

Hydraulic Systems

The water impounded hopper collects the bottom ash from the furnace and then transports it by means of a hydraulic sluicing pipeline to a de-watering bin, settling tank, surge tank or lagoon. Conveying rates of up to 150 tonnes/hour can be achieved with this technology.

Some of the Key elements of the Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling continuous removal technology include: -

  • Automatic chain tensioning unit ~ based on a oil / inhert gas differential system which provides a fully automatic system.  This feature correctly tensions the chain under all load conditions and has the facility to send data back to the PLC for visual or audible indication in the control centre.
  • Hydraulic Drive & Power PackClyde Bergemann Materials Handling up to now have only adopted this type of drive system.  However, it is possible and in some cases more economical to provide electro-magnetic drives.  Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling adopt the hydraulic system because of the inherent torque characteristics of this type of technology.  Normally twin motors are used which provides excellent start-up characteristics and allows better flexibility during upset conditions.  Power packs are installed close to the drive motors to simplify and minimise hydraulic interconnecting pipe work.
  • Sprockets & Chain Wheels ~ essentially there are three types: - tooth sprocket for drive & tail, transition wheel and submerged transition wheel.  All components are procured from well known leading suppliers , however these could be manufactured locally depending on project requirements.
  • Driving Chain ~ To meet the demanding duties placed on the SSC, Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling use proprietary heavy duty case hardened round link chain.
