Port Castings

Clyde Bergemann Anthony-Ross Port Castings
A Proven Record of Success

Since 1996 Clyde Bergemann Anthony-Ross has been providing castings to all our boiler designs, and worldwide, 35 recovery boilers use our port castings at the primary air level. This experience enables our engineers to create port casting designs that perform better:

  • Clyde Bergemann Anthony-Ross designs custom fit the casting for each boiler.
  • We design a thin casting and use the cool water in the furnace tubes to take heat out of the casting.
  • The casting fits exactly to the tube bends to have maximum surface area for cooling.
  • We use tube bend drawings to get the exact tube bends.
  • We use a heat transferring mastic between the casting and the tubes, to ensure maximum cooling.
  • Membrane between the tubes is cooled by the water in the tubes, preventing holes from burning through.

Material:  Clyde Bergemann Anthony-Ross uses stainless steel grade 309 material for our castings. This is more expensive than the normal carbon steel material used by others, but it gives better corrosion resistance and lower maintenance.

Long life: Although we have 35 boilers with an average of 100 castings each, we sell few replacement castings. Some of our castings are still working after several years. Other companies use a thick casting, which does not last as long. Thick casting cannot be cooled effectively, so heat builds up and corrodes it, like your air port nozzles.

Superior mastic life and performance: Our Super Demon BB Mastic has been tested against many different types to provide mastic that is superior in both heat conductivity and bonding strength. This mastic bond and the wide-face of our castings allow the deterioration to be minimal.

Easy-to-install or replace: The studs that hold the castings in place are attached to a bar welded to the tubes only at the top and bottom. This puts less stress on the tubes than welding the stud directly to the tube. After years of operation, the nuts can get stuck on the bolts and it is common for the bolts to break off when changing. With our design, you only have to put a new bolt to the bar. The Clyde Bergemann Anthony Ross design is very clear and has excellent access for replacement.

Why change to port castings?

  1. Better means of boiler tube protection with casting strength and width of coverage.
  2. Easy to repair by replacement. No repetitive tube welding as with nozzle repair.
  3. Eliminates crotch plate burnout and the risk of loss of smelt containment.
  4. Eliminates the head losses through nozzle stubs.
  5. Provides a more defined and cleaning access port shape.
  6. Port castings can tolerate bed disturbances much better than nozzles, which allows for operation with less primary airflow rates.
